Rerfain cento

example

There are three motets that require serious consideration as refrain centos. They are the flowing, all listed in Table 6.1:(166) La bele m'ocit, Dies, (433) Cele ma d s'amour donee and (880T) Cis a cui je sui amie. In these pieces, the proportion of refrains with concordances is very high: between two-thirds and three-quarters. In those cases where the remaining refrains do not have concordances, the evidence to suggest that they are genuine refrains is very good. There are obvious distinctions of coherence.

refrain centoと考えられている(166) La bele m'ocit, Dies, (433) Cele ma d s'amour donee and (880T) Cis a cui je sui amieの3つのモテットがある。

There are many instances of switching rhythmic mode between one refrain and the next. Where concordances with music exist, these in large part agree with the melody in the motet in question. Doss-Quinby expressed the idea that the presence of refrains is often indicated in the sources by the relevant text-lines beginning with an upper-case letter.
35 0f all the pieces discussed in this chapter, only two mark out their refrains with upper-case letters. Significantly, they are two of the three pieces which are under consideration as refirain centos: Cis a cui je sui amie and Cele ma d s'amour donee.36 Nevertheless, there is a clear justification for beginning to consider these pieces in the same artistic terms。

To qualify for any kind of status as genre, these three pieces should exhibit a range of characteristics that separated them, as a group, from the rest of the repertory. Such a group could then be placed alongside the clausula, conductus cum cauda or jeu parti. But distribution and concordance-base vary greatly. The motet to which Cis a cui is the tenor is found in the seventh fascicle of Montpellier, in Bamberg, in Turin and in the Besan^on index. Cele ma d s'amour donee is found in W2 and Noailles whereas La bele m'ocit, Dies was viewed by the scribe of Montpellier as so important that it opens the sixth fascicle of the manuscript.

The two centos which form moteti in two-part works are themselves very different from each other. The difference lies in questions of tenor usage and the nature of the relationship between the motetus and the tenor. La bele m'ocit, Dies consists ofa motetus voice which is fitted to one of the most well-known and widely used tenor fragments in this repertory: In seculum. The ways in which this particular fragment can be manipulated have been discussed by Klaus Hofmann
37 and others. Ludwig would have described the organisation of this piece's tenor as unpatterned −as opposed to the patterned tenors which consist of repeating ordines superimposed over one or more statements of a chant melody. Here, the melody is presented three times.

It receives a different rhythmic profile on each occasion. The reasons are straightforward. Changing rhythmic mode, irregular phrase-lengths and differing melodic profiles of independent refrains are characteristics of this motet. They force the composer into an irregular rhythmic organisation of the tenor. There is an analogous situation in a three-part piece whose motetus is cast in the form of a rondeau over the In seculum tenor:(188) J'ai les biens d'amours - (189) Que ferai, biau sire Dieus? 一 In seculum (M13). There, we have already observed that this particular melisma lends itself well to this sort of procedure. It concentrates on a very limited range of pitches: a large proportion of this melisma focuses on the tetrachord g to c
38

そのmotetusが In seculum tenor:(188) J'ai les biens d'amours - (189) Que ferai, biau sire Dieus?

The two-part motet that opens the sixth fascicle of Montpellier, (166) La bele m'ocit, Dieus! 一 In seculum (M13), is singular in the construction of its motetus and traditional in its tenor structure. The nature of the rhythm imposed on the tenor is exceptional. The other refrain cento,Cele ma d s'amour donee, behaves differently. Its tenor is not based on a chant melisma, but on the Alleluya hodie virgo celos ascendit, using almost the entire first half of the alleluya and all of the verse as far as the end of the melisma on the word ‘Regnat’. The last two words of the chant, ‘in eternum', are not set in polyphony.
39

This sets the piece aside from conventional tenor treatment in the thirteenth-century motet and from the treatment that was found in La bele m 'ocit, Dieus! − In seculum. The Alleluya tenor is more consistently organised in terms of rhythmic mode than that of the In seculum tenor of La bele m 'ocit, Dieus. The former is cast in the first rhythmic mode throughout, but is not organised into ordines. Both tenors are inconsistent but in different ways。

0f the nine putative refrains in Cis a cui je sui amie, six have unequivocal concordances. Of these, three occur in one other place only: the roman entitled La Cour d'amour by Mathieu le Poirier. Indeed, two of the refrains
which appear consecutively in the motet tenor are found in contiguity, although reversed, in La Cour d'amour.40 1n addition, two of the other refrains appear fairly close together in the roman by Jacquemart Gielee: Renart lu nouvel.

Although the refrains in Renart le nouvel are furnished with music in three of the four versions of the poem,
42 there are so many refrains in that part of the story that their appearance both there and in the motet may well be fortuitous. Unfortunately, the sole manuscript of La Cour d'amour― Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale, n. a. f. 1731 − does not include notation, so it is impossible to compare anything more than the texts.43 A clear relationship exists between this motet voice and the one specific roman. Until we have a wider view of these sorts of relationships, it is difficult to make any kind of realistic interpretation of this correspondence. Eχplanations might range from the purely accidental to common authorship.44

Two further types of such intertextual relationships are found in the two other refrain centos. The first concerns the density of refrain concordances between La bele m 'ocit, Dieus! and a group of motets in the fifth fascicle of Montpellier. Four works share eχactly the same refrain as La bele m 'ocit, Dieus! . 0f these, three behave in an uncomplicated fashion. The same text and melody appear both in La bele m 'ocit, Dieus! and in one or even two of the others.

ln the motet (184) En son service amornous― (185) Tant est plesant一In seculum(Ml3), the final refrain corresponds to that of La bele m 'ocit, Dieus!. Furthermore, it is also presented over the same portion of the tenor melisma: In seculum. Although the rhythm of both upper voices and tenors is slightly different in the two motets, the resultant counterpoint is very similar indeed. The two passages are given as Example 6.3。

モテット (184) En son service amornous― (185) Tant est plesant一In seculum(Ml3)中では、最後のrefrainがLa bele m 'ocit, Dieus!

The motet (433) Cele ma d s'amour donee Alleluya . .・(M34) is based on a tenor that uses a liturgical item in its entirety. With the eχception of the melisma on the word ‘Regnal:', which is the basis for many clausulae and Latin motets, the use of the remainder of this liturgical item in polyphony is highly restricted. In addition to this motet which uses the whole item, there survive three French motets on the melismas Alleluya, Hodie and Gaudete respectively
.46 Three two-part French motets on the Regnat melisma survive.47

 モテット(433) Cele ma d s'amour donee Alleluya . .

This means that of the liturgical item whose text reads as follows, ‘Alleluya. Hodie Maria virgo celos ascendit. Gaudete qui cum Christo regnat in eternum', the following parts are used for a layer of motet composition, in addition to (433)Cele ma d s'amour donee Alleluya . .(M34): Alleluya, Hodie (‘Maria virgo celos ascendit' is omitted) Gaudet and Regnat. As in the case of Cele ma s'amour donee Alleluya Hodie, the last two words, ‘in eternum', are left out of consideration。

Alleluya. Hodie Maria virgo celos ascendit. Cele ma s'amour donee Alleluya . 最終的にCele ma s'amour donee Alleluya Hodieとなる(‘Maria virgo celos ascendit' is omitted)が、最後の2つの言葉‘in eternum'は無視されている。

The compositions on the Alleluya. Hodie (M34) melisma clearly behave in a similar fashion to each other, and share similar patterns of distribution. We have already seen how three rondeau-motets function as a cycle. They are all based on the same tenor chant, have identical structures in their upper parts and belong to the same type-cadre. Even though they use different refrains, the non-repeating parts of these rondeau voice-parts are very similar. The issues here are not so clear, however, as in the case of the rondeau-motet cycle.

 Alleluya.

First, the motets on the Alleluya. Hodie tenor do not occupy the whole chant; in the case of the rondeau-motets, the alleluya verse which was used for this cyclic setting consisted very neatly of three appropriately sized melismas. The Alleluya. Hodie does not behave like this, and a polyphonic setting of the melismas on any of the words ‘Maria', 'virgo’‘celos’ or‘ascendit' is scarcely imaginable. They consist only of six, nine, nine and five pitches respectively. This contrasts with sixteen pitches for ‘AIleluya', twenty-three pitches for ‘Hodie', twenty-four pitches for ‘Gaudete' and over forty for‘Regnat'. Significantly, the texts of the three pieces, Mieuz aim mourir ― Alleluya, Renvoirsiement― Hodie and J'ai fait ami a mon chois ― Gaudete, have little in common − not even their refrains。

Alleluya. Mieuz aim mourir ― Alleluya, Renvoirsiement― Hodie and J'ai fait ami a mon chois ― Gaudeteは、ほとんど共通性がないということだ。

The refrain can, however, help a great deal
when it comes to try and interpret the three French-texted motets on the melisma Regnat, and to answer the question: which, if any, of these pieces is related to the refrain cento Cele m'a s'amour donee ―Alleluya.」Hodie? The three motets on Regnat which need to be considered because of their proximity to Cele m'a s'amour (they are all copied in Noailles with rare concordances in related manuscripts) are (445) Nus ne sait mes mausRegnat (M34), (446) Dusque ci ai ― Regnat (M34) and (447) Lonc le rieu de la fontaineRegnat (M34).

Of the five lines which make up the text of Nus ne sait mes maus,
48 the first two are a refrain( Nus ne sent les maus, s'il n'aime/ Ou s'il n'a ame'(vdB 1402)), as is the last single line ('Je les sent, les maus d'amours(vdB 1059)). They are here separated by two lines. They are also separated by two lines in the refrain centoCele ma d s'amour donee , and they both appear in that part of the two motets where the tenor is working its way through the melisma Regnat. The refrain, 'Nus ne sait mes maus, s'il n'aime / Ou s'il n'a ame, occurs at the beginning of the motet Nus ne sait and it also appears at the beginning of the statement of the Regnat melisma in Cele ma d s'amour donee.

Nus ne sait mes mausの歌詞を構成する5つの行のうち、最初の2つはrefrain Nus ne sent les maus, s'il n'aime/ Ou s'il n'a ame'(vdB 1402)であるが、最後の1行は'Je les sent,les maus d'amours(vdB 1059)である。 refrain, 'Nus ne sait mes maus, s'il n'aime / Ou s'il n'a ameは、モテットNus ne saitの最初に出現し、それはまた、 Cele ma s'amour donee中のRegnatメリスマの宣言の開始を意味している。

What this means is that, except for a few minor changes resulting from the unsuccessful attempts to impose a regular ordo on the Regnat tenor, the counterpoint in these passages is remarkably similar in both pieces. This is made clear in Eχample 6.4.

This very same refrain is also used in the motet Dusque!d ai ― Regnat. It appears in a different contrapuntal relationship to that seen in Cele ma s'amour or Nus ne sail. Only one of these three motets based on Regnat may be set alongside the other pieces which are closely related to the refrain cento Cele ma s'amour donee: Nus ne sail and not one of the other two. This group of motets is not cyclic in eχactly the same way as the group of rondeau-motets mentioned earlier, they are witnesses to a self-referential mode of composition which,
on the basis of manuscript preservation and distribution, may well be localised away from Paris and in the north-east of present-day France.

Cele ma s'amour doneeAlleluja emerges as a very singular work indeed. Its relations are the curious experimental compositions that one finds in Noalles and related sources. The motets themselves are such a great distance removed from what might be considered to be the ‘mainstream' of motet composition. It is unrelated to either of the other two works which appear to make use of any technique of centonisation.
48 Discussed above, P.114.

それは、centonization( is the composition of a new melody from a stock of existing melodic formulas)のテクニックを使った他の2作品のいずれとも関連していない。

The two refrain centos that form the upper parts to motets, Cele ma s'amour donee Alleluya and La belle m'ocit, Dieus! In seculum, are separated by tenor usage and conteχt. The former is a refrain cento which is constructed over almost a complete liturgical item with no internal repetition. In the latter, the refrain cento is built over one of the most popular tenor melismas. It is not heavily indebted to the concept of ordo, but it does go through such familiar motions as presenting the tenor three times, each with a different rhythmic profile.

 モテットCele ma s'amour donee Alleluya and La belle m'ocit, Dieus!

The context for each of the pieces is very different. La belle m'ocit, Dieus! is unique in Montpellier. There, it occupies a place of some distinction at the start of the sixth fascicle, and shares significant characteristics with a number of pieces in the fifth fascicle of that manuscript. Cele ma s'amour donee is closely related to a number of pieces in the chansonniers. This re-emphasises the substantial geographical divide which separates Montpellier (Paris) from Noailles and Roi (Artois/Arras), and hence also separates the two motets. Cis a cui je sui amie in contrast to the other two works discussed, is a tenor and also the basis for a piece with a radically different distribution。

La belle m'ocit, Dieus!

Three pieces exist which all attempt to use an unbroken sequence of refrains to construct a voice-part. They do not, however, constitute a genre in the sense implied by Gennrich and others, but a technique which might appear in various subgenres of the motet. It appears here both in the tenors and upper voices of French-teχted motets. It also appears in conductus, and no one has yet examined the context and content of the texts of Latin motets from this viewpoint to see whether something broadly analogous is present there. This technique of constructing a cento is comparable to some of the more complex manipulations of tenors − the clausula with the Nusmido tenor, for eχample
49 − or such techniques as modal transmutation。

Two points seem to emerge from the investigation of this music. (1) Only three pieces really fit the received description of refrain cento. (2) The three pieces are so radically different in their musical and poetic characteristics that this phenomenon needs to be considered a technique and not a genre.
