The Orchestration of the Introitus
and the Kyrie

The Introitus is Mozart's composition throughout. Differences in the ink make it clear that Mozart worked on this movement at two distinctly different periods: Initially he noted down all the most important functions (vocal lines, figured bass, interludes, and some fragments of motives) in a jet-black, Indian-type ink, and subsequently he completed the score in a much lighter, greyish green ink, The entire manuscript, however, bears the clear and unquestionable characteristics of Mozart's own handwriting.

最初は、ジェット・ブラック、インディアンタイプで、vocal lines, figured bass, interludes, and some fragments of motivesといったもっとも重要な機能を書き下ろしていった。

In the Kyrie only the vocal parts and the figured bass are definitely in Mozart's hand. The writing of the orchestral parts is distinctly different from that of the vocal lines, a fact which has already been pointed out by L. Nowak:

"The difference in hand- writing in the Kyrie fugue poses a riddle to wbich there can hardly be a satisfactory solution. Compared to Mozart's normal writing in the choral parts and the orchestral bass, the rest of these pages (fol 5 -9) almost look 'sick'. One could be tempted to say that it is tbis which Mozart wrote in his dying moments and not the Lacnmosa, But it is quite possible that Mozart considered the orchestration of the Kyrie fugue as something -for him- purely mechanical and that be wrote it down during a fit of illness when he was incapable of concentrating on actual composition."
(w.A. Mozart, NMA, Requiem, Part Vol. I, p. IX)

It might be possible to accept this as an explanation for the variations of the handwriting. But in the course of the Kyrie there occur so many elementary faults and mistakes that even assuming Mozart to have been in the worst possible state of health any share of his can be precluded with almost complete certainty.

Within the 52 bars of the Kyrie the parts of the transposing basset horns contain no less than 21 wrong accidentals, which result in the weirdest harmonies. Such mistakes can only have happened to a musician who had no experience in the transposition of basset horns( In the first print of 1800, which was based on a copy of the score, these mistakes have already been corrected).

But there are other places in the instrumental parts of this Kyrie which are proof of the hand of a pupil:

In bar 41 the Corno di bassetto I ,resricted by its compass, can no longer play in unison with the sopranos on their upper notes. Hence we find following line, which clashes with that of the tenors and which represents a 'solution' which, for Mozart, would have been utterly inconceivable:

Kyrie

In bar 42 the suspension b♭ in the altos is flattened out by the a' a, A of trumpets and tinpani.

In the Adagio (bars 50-52) the four-part writing in the woodwind, for no visible reason, changes into a three-part setting (Corno di bassetto II unisono with Fag. 1). To make matters worse, this occurs on the final, cadential kyrie declaimed simultaneously by all the voices.

Considering that Mozart's prime anxiety was to commit to paper as many of his ideas for the Requiem as possible, it seems unlikely that he himself would, at that juncture, have bothered with the largely mechanical task of such a colla parte orchestration. Apart from that it is surely out of the question that Mozart could have over looked such a large number of mistakes of notation and progression.

In his essay: "Wer hat die Instrumental-Stimmen in der Kyrie Fuge des Requiems von W.A. Mozart geschrieben?" Eine vorlaufige Studie. ("Who has written the instrumental parts of the Kyrie fugue of the Requiem of W.A. Mozart?" A preliminary study) (Mozart Jahrbuchd Salzburg 1976) L. Nowak after renewed studies and comparison of the hand writing, comes to the conclusion that the upper five staves of the score (violins, violas, basset-horns. and bassoons) were written by Mozart's pupil Franz Jacob Freystadtler, then aged 23. The trumpet and timpani parts, however, are supposedly Sussmayrs (cf facsimile I).

Matters of Orchestration
The score of the Introitus shows quite clearly the orchestral completement which Mozart envisaged for his Requiem. It is highly unlikely that Mozart intended to use additional instrument (such as extra wind) in the later sections of the work, as presumably he would have menthioned this to Sussmayr. Occasionally one hears the view that Mozart would have chosen a richer and more colourful orchestration to characterize the other movements, but L. Nowak writes:

"The whole habitus of the entire work speaks against tbis assumption". The tonal colouring, which Mozart has chosen in the most thrifty manner for his Requiem, corresponds completely with the character of a solemn Missa da Requiem in Austrian sacred music as it was customary at the end of the 18th century" and"... in the case of the Requiem it was customary to be reticent in the use of imstruments, if Mozart had had a larger instrumental complement in mind, he surely would have introduced it in the Dies irae when describing the Last Judgement."

Indeed, had it been Mozart's intention to increase his orchestral forces, this would have become evident at the latest at the tremor of this movement. But the layout of the autograph shows quite clearly that he intended to adhere to the orchestra which he used initially, and it certainly was his intention (as was his custom) to retain it for the entire work. (The four empty systems between chorus and strings can hardly have been intended for anything else but basset-horns, basoons, trumpets, and timpani.

At best one could imagine a notation in short score for the trombones, or if these were not to play colla parte with the vocal lines, or if there were insufficient insufficient space in the score- such as was the case in the autograph of the Magic Flute.)

It must be stressed that there are few examples in Mozart's sacred music where we find an instrumental increment. One such case occurs in the Mass in c minor, KV 427, where he adds a flute to the pastoral concertino of the wind instruments in the Et incamatus est. Yet: Where in his Requiem is he to use a flute, unless in the Benedictus? Where the oboes, if not in the Sanctus? In these two movements but only in these one could imagine the orchestration being increased by a pair of horns. However, it would contradict Mozart's customary lay out of a score not to have included this horn sound from the very beginning

And clarinets? At best they could alternate with heir cousins, the basset-horns, in the gentleness of the Benedictus, but even here it must be considered that in the Benedictus of a Mass for the Dead the veiled, gloomy colouring of instruments
which have a slightly unearthly sound should predominate.

The entry in bar 7 the Introitus makes it quiet clear that Mozart had intended the use of trombones in his Requiem. At that point, in preparation for the entry of the chorus, he has also noted the trombones corresponding to the voices in the systems of the vocal parts.

It is obvious, even without further comment, that these instruments are to play and stylistically foregone conclusion in the real of sacred music of the 17th and 18th centuries, which needs no further justification.

It cannot be doubted that for Mozart this automatic usage
which was in practice up to the beginning of the 19th century and served as a support for the choir was obligatory, especially in choral movements a polyphonic and baroque stamp. As was customary in those days, the trio of trombones does not command a system of its own, but is included in the vocal parts with the remark col or senza tromboni.

Apart from that, and repeatedly ―as early as in the so-called Waisembaus Mass composed for Vienna in 1767 ―certain individual sections are to be found where the trombones are independent o the vocal setting. The trombone parts of the authentic performing material for the great Mass in c minor (KV. 427) in the keeping of the Heilig Stift in Augsburg give complete evidence, so to speak a final instance, of the high degree of differentiation with which Mozart by now treated the trombone sound.

In this new version of the Requiem the above mentioned treatment of the trombones was largely utilised as a basis.

In the Introitus the trombones could remain silent from bar 34 onwards (as also later in the Communio, bar 16 ff) in order to give a special luminosity to the words ex lux perpetua with their entry at bar 43, resp. bar 25.

In the kyrie the trombone parts of the new orchestral material are set out on two systems: upper system contains the text of the first point. This colla parte version demands a high degree of virtuoso mobility on the part of the players and should, if possible, only be chosen if instruments of the period are being used. The lower system an alternative suggestion, having regard to t balance in performances with small choral forces or with modern instruments.

The ascending chromaticism (bars 34-38 ff) taking the cum sancto spirito of the C minor Mass as an example , could perhaps be emphasised in a meaningful manner if, in the semiquaver groups, only the first note of each group were to be played marcato as a crotchet.

At the beginning of the Sanctus, the trombones have the task of forming a bridge, of creating an arch with their threefold invocation.

Apart from the solemn temuto chords (poco fo in bars 18-20 and 50-52 in the Benedictus the th their ostimato notes, take on the trombones function of horns.

In the Agnus Dei the trio of trombones merely adds sonority to the dynamic pattern of the movement.

 Agnus Dei

The Trombone in the Tuba minum
Again and again we come across the view that the solo trombone at the beginning of the Tuba mirum was an error of notation on Mozart's part, and that at the latest by bar 5 he intended a bassoon to play instead of a trombone.

This version almost the impression caricature、 nevertheless it is seriously considered at times, and occasionally even practised in performance. This despite the fact that it is difficult to understand why inthis vision of the Last Judge ment (which is to summons the dead before God's throne) a bassoon should resound instead of a trombone!

It must be admitted that already the first printed score created confusion. as in it this solo was transferred to the basoon. The reason for this change was very simpler: The then Tbomaskantor J.A. Hiller did not have a suitable trombone player at his disposal for his Leipzig performance of the Requiem and therefore had the solo played by his bassoonist. In error this alteration, which Hiller entered into his score, crept into Brteitkopf's first print and has later been reprinted elsewhere and, in this fashion, become widely accepted.

This part of the autograph is inscribed by Mozart with perfect legibility Trombone Solo. This solo, which is written on the same system throughout, ends with the beginning of the new verse Mors stupebit et natura.

Quite apart from the textual necessity, Mozart's choice of a trombone to illustrate this scene is in the best of tradition. As musical literature in general shows, the obligato or concertante trombone was highly favoured in the church music of the 18 th century. In his Singspiel Die schuldigkeit des ersten Gebotes, KV 35, Mozart, then aged ten. used an obligato trombone at the words: "Erwacbe. fauler Knecht, du wirst von deinem Leben genaue Rechnung geben!" ―In the Requiem of G. Reutter jun. (1708-1722), the teacher of Joseph and Michael Haydn, we find the classical model for Mozart's Tuba mirum,. In this work the alto trombone also plays an expressive and roving solo to the same part of the text, and here again only up to the words Mors stupebit.

G. Reutter jun.

From his Salzburg days Mozart must have been acquainted with such examples, and in recollecting and applying them he preserved and strengthened a tradition.
